There is waiting potency in creation,
a pregnant fullness,
ready to emerge in a moment.
The dream of creation
precedes the creation.
Dreaming brings it into being.
Great mother dreams
of her child,
giving birth to her,
holding her in her arms.
She has to wait for the dream
to become a fruition,
to be ready to be,
ready to emerge
out of the void
into manifestation.
Her heart is full,
holding her hands on her belly,
over her unborn child,
her hands radiating
the love she feels
for who will emerge from her,
out of her own body.
She breathes life into creation.
The love and the dream are the same.
As she gives birth,
her petals opening,
the head emerges,
like the center of a flower.
Taking the child in her arms,
Holding him skin to skin,
melding, protecting, loving,
her eyes brim with tears.
He is hers,
yet he belongs to no one,
but to the all.
This painting is about both the mother of Jesus and the mother of creation. .
It is meaningful to me that I used Catholic prayer cards in this artwork, as I found out after I had finished this one, that my grandfather, Joseph, my father’s father, was Catholic. My Grandmother Myrtle was Lutheran. In New Orleans, back in the day, it was scandalous that a Catholic was marrying a Lutheran. I love knowing and honoring the Catholic part of my lineage as well as the natural leanings of my heart towards Mother Mary, perhaps inherited from my Grandpa.
