Prayer to Mother Africa
Holy mother,
I am here
seeking your grace,
your quiet ways,
your pensive gaze.
I want to look
into your eyes forever,
enveloped
in the fullness
of your being,
Take me
into the darkest feminine,
your innermost heart.
Let me sit
in that cavern
of deep black,
holy
and silent.
Take me
into your world
of beauty,
knowing
that you can hold
any pain
this world can give.
You show me
how to bear
the unacceptable.
Hold me
in your deepest place,
the darkness of your womb,
the silent void
where life can come in.
Keep me
in your deepest recesses
until I am ready
to be born
out of your grace.
Take me
in your arms
and hold me forever.
Feed me
your most nourishing milk,
the milk of kindness.
Set me
into the world,
knowing
I am strong,
nurtured in your arms,
full.
May I serve you
and all your children
as I step forward
on the path
I am meant to take.
Thank you, dear Mother Africa
The first layers of this painting were oceanic colors, turquoises and blues. She was Caucasian, wearing a white veil.
The bride of light
dreams of water
of bathing
in hallowed streams
and sacred oceans
She had different faces as the layers built. When I was tuning in one day to get a sense of where we needed to go next, she said simply, “I want to be black.”
Life born in water, human beings’ roots in Africa, she is the Ancient Mother, the Mother of us all.
She is extraordinarily gentle and that is her strength.
